Scoring systems can assess the severity of hirsutism.
The Ferriman-Gallwey model quantitates the extent of hair growth in nine key anatomic sites (seven of them are shown).
Hair growth is graded using a scale from 0 (no terminal hair )to 4 (maximal growth), for a maximum score of 36.
A score of 8 or more indicates the presence of androgen excess.
